on 5-8 March 2024, official visit of the President of Iceland was held to Georgia
On March 5-8, 2024, the official visit of the President of Iceland Guðni Jóhannessonto Georgia was held. The visit was the first high-level visit in Georgia-Iceland bilateral relations, thus carrying historical significance.
The President was accompanied by a business delegation led by the Minister of Environment, Energy, and Climate - Guldaugur Tor Thordarson. The Business delegation was composed of 11 members, mainly the companies' representatives in the Green Energy field.
Within the framework of the visit, on March 5th, a meeting was held between the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, and the President of Iceland, Guðni Jóhannesson.
On March 6th, meetings were held with the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, and the Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze.
On March 6th, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia hosted a business round table, which was opened by the Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Levan Davitashvili, and the President of Iceland.
On March 7th, the President, along with the accompanying delegation and Vice Prime Minister Davitashvili, visited the Akhalkalaki hydroelectric power station, the first foreign investment of the Icelandic company "Landsvirkjun".
Within the framework of the visit, Gudni Johannesson paid his respects and participated in the wreath-laying ceremony at Heroes Square in Tbilisi.
Gudni Johanneson, together with the Minister of State of Georgia Thea Akhvlediani, visited the village of Odze, near the occupation line.
The President delivered a public lecture at Tbilisi State University, where he also met with the rector of the University.
Within the framework of the visit, Guðni Jóhannesson visited the grave of his Georgian friend, a linguist and self-taught Icelandic language speaker Grigol Machavarianii, and as a sign of friendship, the President placed a commemorative Icelandic stone on the grave.
